The Forest Service has released the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement and the Recreation Supply and Demand Analysis. Amazingly, the Forest Service's preferred alternative is to eliminate ALL semi-primitive non-motorized areas!
To justify the bizarre result (and the failure to consider in detail many reasonable alternatives which would have reduced the conflicts caused by allowing snowmobiling and firearm hunting virtually everywhere in the forests), the Forest Service literally made up things which it said the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the District Court held. I'll post detailed information soon about the numerous errors the Forest Service made in preparing the Draft SEIS and the Recreation Supply and Demand Analysis.

Thank you to everyone who submitted comments to the Forest Service on the Notice of Intent. (Yes, even including those of you who commented AGAINST the proposal.) Hopefully, each of your comments will be considered by the Forest Service as they prepare the Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement.

Yesterday the Michigan House Committee on Natural Resources, Toursim, and Recreation reported out House Resolution 0017 which is an attempt to circumvent the public notice and comment process and the authority of the Forest Service "wildlife managers and experts" to have the "final say on how the public land is used". If passed by the House, the resolution opposing "the possible ban of firearm hunting and snowmobiling in certain areas of the Huron-Manistee National Forest" would be sent to "the Chief of the U.S. Forest Service and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation". Tomorrow, the Michigan Senate Committee on Outdoor Recreation and Tourism is schedule to take up Senate Resolution 0006, which is substantially the same.
Please write your Michigan Senator and Representative and tell them you oppose these resolutions and their blatant attempt to make a mockery out of the notice and comment process. Click to find your Michigan Senator or Representative.

The correct address for submitting electronic comments is [email protected] (You should use "Forest Plan SEIS" as the subject.)
The website previously had omitted the hyphen between huron and manistee. If you already submitted comments, please resubmt them to the correct address.
I'm very sorry for the error.
